Serum and essence sound like the same thing, and brands do not always use the words consistently. This page is for anyone building a luxury routine who wants to know what each step is, which comes first, how much of each to use and whether both are worth paying for. We use real luxury products as examples, with sizes and price per ml from their listings, and we stick to texture, order and amount rather than promised results.

The short difference

Essence comes from Asian skincare routines. It is usually close to water in texture, and you use a generous amount, poured into the palm and pressed in. SK-II Facial Treatment Essence is the best-known example: its listing describes a lightweight, water-like liquid with over 90% PITERA. See what is a skincare essence for more.

Serum is thicker, from a fluid to a light gel or oil-bead texture, and you use a few drops or one or two pumps. Serums tend to be smaller bottles at a higher price per ml. Augustinus Bader The Serum and SK-II Facial Treatment Serum are typical luxury examples.

Luxury examples with price per ml

Price per ml shows why the two steps feel so different to buy. An essence comes in a big bottle because you use more each time. A serum comes in a small bottle because you use only a few drops. The table uses listing sizes and prices at the time of writing.

Which goes first

The usual rule is thinnest to thickest. Essence is thinner, so it goes first, right after cleansing or toner. Serum follows, then eye cream, then moisturizer, then oil if you use one, and sunscreen last in the morning. When a brand gives a different order for its own line, follow the brand. Our routine order guide and routine order builder help you set it up.

SK-II's own serum listing says to apply it after essence and before moisturizer, which matches the general rule. Our page on serum before or after moisturizer covers the next step.

How much of each to use

For an essence, pour a coin-size amount into your palm and press it over the face and neck. For a serum, 2 to 3 drops or one pump is a common starting point; the SK-II serum listing says 2 to 3 pumps, dotted on forehead, cheeks and chin. Using more than the brand suggests rarely helps and makes the bottle run out faster. See how much serum to use and how to use a skincare essence.

  1. 1

    Cleanse and pat dry.

  2. 2

    Optional toner or softener.

  3. 3

Essence: coin-size amount, pressed in with palms.

  4. 4

Serum: a few drops or pumps, smoothed over the face.

  5. 5

    Eye cream, then moisturizer.

  6. 6

    Morning: sunscreen last.

Do you need both?

No. If your budget allows one luxury step, most people choose a serum or a moisturizer, because those steps carry the most concentrated formulas a brand sells. An essence is an extra layer some people enjoy for its feel. If you love the ritual of pressing in an essence, it fits easily, but skipping it does not break a routine.

If you want to try both without buying two full sizes, look at gift sets, which often pair an essence with a cream or serum. Our luxury essence guide and luxury face serum guide list full-size options.

Where it gets confusing

Brand naming blurs the line. SK-II's SKINPOWER Essence and GenOptics UltraAura are both called essences, but the listings describe them as serum-like products sold in 50 ml dropper bottles. La Prairie sells an essence-in-lotion. Shiseido calls its first watery step a softener. The rule that works: judge by texture and bottle size, not the name. Watery and big bottle means the essence slot. Thicker and small bottle means the serum slot. For the watery steps, see essence vs toner.

Frequently asked questions

Is an essence the same as a serum? No. An essence is thinner and used in larger amounts; a serum is thicker and used a few drops at a time. Some brands use the names loosely.

Does essence go before or after serum? Before. Apply essence after cleansing or toner, then serum.

Can I skip the essence? Yes. It is an optional step. Many routines go cleanser, serum, moisturizer, sunscreen.

Why is serum more expensive per ml? Serums come in small bottles and you use only a few drops, so brands price them higher per ml than essences.
