Routine and application
The usual order runs from the thinnest texture to the thickest: cleanser, toner, essence, serum, eye cream, moisturizer, oil, then sunscreen in the morning or a sleeping mask at night.
- Rule of thumb
- thinnest to thickest
- Always last in the morning
- sunscreen

Most skincare houses describe the same sequence: water-thin products first, then the more concentrated serums, then creams that sit on top. A watery essence spread after a rich cream has little chance to reach the skin, which is the reason for the order. The routine order builder puts your own steps in that order.
Amounts are smaller than many people expect. Brands commonly suggest a pea-sized amount of face cream, two or three drops or one pump of serum, and a rice-grain of eye cream for both eyes. Using more empties a $300 jar faster without any stated benefit.
When a brand gives a different order for its own line, for example a softener before the essence or an oil mixed into the cream, follow the brand. Their instructions are written for how their textures were made to layer.
Common mistakes
- Putting a watery essence or serum on after a rich cream.
- Mixing sunscreen into moisturizer, which thins the layer the label's protection is based on.
- Using several times the suggested amount of a costly cream.
