How-to
Serum before or after moisturizer
Published
Short answer
Serum goes before moisturizer. The standard routine order runs from the thinnest texture to the thickest, so a watery or fluid serum comes first and a cream follows to sit on top. Let the serum settle until your skin no longer feels wet or tacky, usually a minute or so, then apply the cream. If a brand gives a different order for its own line, follow the brand.

This page is for anyone who has just bought a luxury serum and a jar of cream and wants to use them in the right order. It covers the standard thin-to-thick rule, how long to wait between layers, how much of each to use, what the luxury brands themselves print on their listings, and the few cases where the order changes, such as face oils and morning sunscreen. Every product named here comes from our gear guides, and every instruction quoted is what the brand states on its listing. No step here promises a result: the goal is simply to apply what you paid for in a sensible order.
The thin-to-thick rule
Most skincare routines follow one simple idea: apply the thinnest, most watery products first and the thickest last. Cleanser comes off, then a toner or softener, then an essence, then serum, then eye cream, then moisturizer, then a face oil if you use one. In the morning sunscreen goes on last. At night a sleeping mask, if you use one, is the final step.
A serum is usually a fluid, gel or light lotion. A moisturizer is usually a cream or emulsion with more oils and waxes in it. Applying the lighter texture first means it goes onto clean skin rather than onto a layer of cream. The cream then sits over everything below it. You can build your own order with the routine order builder, which uses this same sequence.

How to layer serum and moisturizer, step by step
There is no fixed waiting time printed on most labels. The practical test is touch: if your fingers drag or slide on a wet film, give it a little longer. If you rush, the cream can slide around on top of the serum and some textures may roll up into small flakes, which our moisturizer pilling fix covers in detail.
- 1
Cleanse and pat your face dry with a clean towel.
- 2
If you use a toner, softener or essence, apply it first and let it settle.
- 3
Dispense your serum. Many brands suggest 2 to 3 drops or 1 pump for the whole face.
- 4
Smooth the serum over the face and neck with your fingertips, using light upward strokes.
- 5
Wait until the skin no longer feels wet or tacky. For most serums this takes about a minute.
- 6
Apply eye cream around the orbital bone if you use one.
- 7
Take a pea-size amount of moisturizer, warm it between your fingertips, and smooth it over the face and neck.
- 8
In the morning, finish with sunscreen as the last step.
What the luxury brands print on their listings
The brand directions on the listings in our guides agree with the standard order. Lancome says Absolue Longevity MD Reset serum goes on clean skin morning and night before moisturizer, and that in the morning daytime SPF follows as the final step. Lancome's Absolue Premium Bx Day Cream SPF 15 listing says to smooth it on in the morning after cleansing, toning and applying your serums.
Shiseido is equally clear. The Future Solution LX Total Regenerating Cream listing says to apply it as the last step in your night routine, and the Total Protective Cream SPF 30 listing says to apply it as the last step in your morning routine. Augustinus Bader says to apply The Cream and The Rich Cream to cleansed, dry skin, morning and evening. For a full picture of each line, see our luxury face serum guide and luxury face cream guide.

How much serum and how much cream
More product does not mean better absorption, and with luxury prices it costs real money. A common guide is 2 to 3 drops or 1 pump of serum for the face, and a pea-size amount of cream, roughly 0.3 to 0.5 ml. Add a little more if you also cover the neck. Our how much serum to use and how much face cream to use pages go into amounts and how long a bottle lasts.
If your skin feels heavy or greasy after both layers, the usual fix is to use less cream, not to skip the serum. Our greasy cream fix walks through it.

Exceptions: oils, sunscreen, and brand-specific orders
Face oil. Most routines put a face oil after moisturizer because it is the most occlusive texture. Some people prefer to mix a drop of oil into their cream instead. Either way, it comes after the serum.
Sunscreen. In the morning, sunscreen is the final skincare step, after serum and moisturizer. A day cream that carries SPF on its label takes the moisturizer slot and is applied last. Our page on where sunscreen goes in a luxury routine explains the details.
Brand-specific steps. Japanese brands often add a softener or lotion step before serum. Shiseido builds its routine around six steps: cleanse, soften, strengthen, treat, moisturize, protect. SK-II puts its Facial Treatment Essence after cleansing and toning. When a brand gives an order for its own products, follow it. The routine order guide shows the full sequence.
Note.If you are starting a new serum and cream at the same time, introduce one at a time and patch test each one first. See our patch test guide before applying a new product to your whole face.
Common mistakes when layering
If you want to compare morning and evening steps side by side, read morning vs night skincare routine.
- Applying cream first, then serum on top. The serum then sits on a layer of cream rather than on clean skin.
- Using several serums at once without checking each brand's directions on whether they should be combined.
- Rushing straight from serum to cream while the serum is still wet, which can cause sliding or pilling.
- Using far more than a pea of cream, which often leads to a heavy or shiny finish.
- Putting sunscreen under moisturizer in the morning instead of last.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to wait between serum and moisturizer? A short wait helps. Most people wait until the serum no longer feels wet or tacky, which usually takes about a minute. No luxury listing in our guides gives a fixed time.
Can I mix serum and moisturizer in my palm? Some people do, but brands write their directions for separate steps. Applying them one after another follows the label and keeps the thin-to-thick order.
Does eye cream go before or after serum? Usually after serum and before moisturizer. Our eye cream before or after moisturizer page covers it.
What if my day cream has SPF? Apply it as the last step in the morning, after serum, as the Shiseido and Lancome SPF day cream listings direct.
