Paying a premium for a cream and then disliking how it feels is frustrating. Before you give up on it, there are a few simple changes that often make a rich cream feel very different. This page is for anyone whose moisturizer leaves a shiny film, feels heavy under makeup, or seems to sit on top of the skin. It works through the likely causes in order, from the free fixes to switching textures, and lists the lighter versions available in our guides. We describe textures as the brands do and make no promises about how any product will suit your skin.

Common causes, from most to least likely

Work down this list in order. The first three fixes cost nothing and solve many cases. Changing products is the last step, not the first.

Fix 1: use less, and spread it thinner

Most heavy feel comes from simple overuse. Rich creams spread a long way, and a little more than you need often sits on the surface. Our how much face cream to use page has amounts in ml for each product type.

  1. 1

Take one pea-size amount, about 0.3 to 0.5 ml, with a clean spatula.

  2. 2

Warm it between two fingertips for a few seconds.

  3. 3

Dot it on forehead, cheeks, nose and chin.

  4. 4

Spread each dot outward with light strokes until no thick patches remain.

  5. 5

Wait a few minutes and check in a mirror. If an area looks dry, add a tiny extra touch there only.

Fix 2: warm it and give layers time

Warming a rich cream between your fingertips softens it so it spreads thinly. Lancome describes Absolue The Soft Cream as transforming into a thin, serum-like lotion on application, and many rich creams behave similarly once warmed.

Layering speed matters too. If you apply cream while serum or essence is still wet, the cream can slide around and feel slick. Wait until each layer no longer feels wet or tacky, usually a minute or so, before the next. If your cream rolls into small flakes, see our moisturizer pilling fix. The correct order is in serum before or after moisturizer.

Fix 3: simplify your layers

A rich cream on top of a face oil on top of another moisturizing serum can feel heavy simply because there is a lot of product. Try dropping one step for a week. If you use a face oil, try mixing a single drop into your cream instead of a separate layer, or keep the oil for the evening only.

In the morning, a thinner layer of cream also helps sunscreen and makeup sit well. Some people use a lighter cream in the morning and the richer one at night. Our morning vs night routine and day vs night cream pages explain how to split them.

Fix 4: switch to the light version of the same line

If a cream still feels heavy after the fixes above, the texture may simply be richer than you want. Many luxury lines sell a lighter sibling, so you can keep the brand you like and change only the texture. Here are the light options in our guides, with sizes and listed prices. Our lightweight luxury moisturizer guide covers them in detail, and cream textures explained describes the differences.

When a rich cream is the right choice

Rich creams are designed for a fuller feel. Augustinus Bader positions The Rich Cream for normal to dry skin and colder, drier climates. If that matches you, using less and warming it may be all you need. Some people keep a rich cream for winter and a light one for summer. Our rich cream guide for dry skin lists the fuller textures.

If you are choosing between two textures in one line, see Augustinus Bader Rich Cream vs The Cream and Lancome Absolue Soft Cream vs Rich Cream.

Note.If a cream causes stinging, redness or bumps rather than just a heavy feel, stop using it. That is a different issue from texture.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my moisturizer feel heavy only in summer? Warmer, more humid weather makes rich textures feel heavier. Many people switch to a lighter cream or use less in warm months.

Should I apply cream to damp skin? Follow the brand. Augustinus Bader says to apply its creams to cleansed, dry skin. Applying a rich cream to wet skin can make it slide.

Can I blot excess cream? Yes. Pressing a tissue lightly over shiny areas removes surface excess. Next time, start with less.

Is a greasy feel a sign the cream is not absorbing? It usually means there is more product than the skin surface needs. Using less and spreading thinner is the first fix.
