Gift sets from La Prairie, Augustinus Bader, SK-II, Shiseido, Dr. Barbara Sturm and Lancome often carry a stated value well above the price. Some are real savings, some are mostly packaging, and many do not list sizes clearly enough to tell. This page gives a simple method for checking any set by adding up its ml, works through real examples using listing prices recorded on October 10, 2026, and lists the red flags that make a set hard to judge.

The method: add up the ml and price each piece

The last step matters most. A set is only good value for the pieces you will finish. A cleanser you will not use, or a duplicate of something you already own, adds nothing. The price per ml calculator and how to calculate skincare price per ml help with the math.

  1. 1

List every piece in the set and its size in ml. Convert fl oz at 29.57 ml per fl oz.

  2. 2

Find the full-size version of each piece and work out its price per ml.

  3. 3

Multiply each piece's ml by that price per ml to get what it would cost bought separately.

  4. 4

Add those up and compare with the set price.

  5. 5

Remove anything you would not use, and redo the total.

Why the stated value is not the value

Many set listings print a value, such as $446 value or $650 value. That figure is the brand's own number, often based on its full retail prices for each piece, and sometimes on full-size equivalents of travel sizes. It is a starting point, not proof of savings. Two sets with the same stated value can be very different deals once you price the ml yourself.

A set without sizes is the hardest case. If the listing does not say how many ml each piece holds, you cannot check the value at all. Treat it as a way to sample the line, not as a cheaper way to buy product.

Worked examples at October 10, 2026 listing prices

These use only sets and full sizes from our guides, with listing prices recorded on October 10, 2026. Prices change, so redo the math on the day you buy.

Note.Figures are estimates at listing prices on one date. The 50 ml Augustinus Bader creams are listed at 1.7 fl oz, about 50.3 ml, which gives $6.27 per ml.

Sets you cannot fully check

Several sets in our guides do not state the sizes of their pieces, so the ml math cannot be done from the listing. The La Prairie Skin Caviar Lifting Discovery Set lists four travel-size pieces at $230 but does not name them or give sizes. The Dr. Barbara Sturm Discovery Kit lists seven products at $150, with no sizes. The SK-II six-piece set at $290 names four of its six pieces and no sizes.

These can still be good buys if your goal is to try a brand before a full jar, because the entry price is lower than most full sizes. Just do not assume they are cheaper per ml. Our mini vs full size skincare page covers when minis make sense.

What about a Lancome Absolue set

Lancome Absolue sets appear around holidays, often pairing a cream with a serum, eye care or the Rose 80 lotion. We do not track a current Absolue set in our guides, but the same math works. Price The Soft Cream at about $5.75 per ml (1.0 oz jar, $170) or about $4.09 per ml as a 2.0 oz refill ($242), and The Serum at about $9.33 per ml (30 ml, $280), using October 10, 2026 listing prices. Then multiply by the ml in the set. For the line itself, see what is Lancome Absolue.

  • Worth it: a full-size product you already use, sold at its usual price with extras included.
  • Worth it: a set where every piece has a stated size and the ml math comes out below buying separately.
  • Worth it: a discovery set when you want to try a brand and the price is well below one full jar.
  • Not worth it: pieces you will not use, or duplicates that will pass their period after opening before you open them.
  • Not worth it: a set with no sizes, bought only because of a high stated value.
  • Check: buy from a trusted seller. See how to buy authentic luxury skincare on Amazon.

Frequently asked questions

Are luxury skincare bundles cheaper than buying separately? Sometimes. Add up the ml and price each piece at its full-size rate. Sets with a full-size hero product plus extras at the same price often come out ahead.

Is the stated value on a set accurate? It is the brand's own figure. Use it as a starting point and check the math yourself.

Are travel sizes in sets good value? Small sizes usually cost more per ml than full sizes. They are useful for trying a product or for travel.

Which sets are easiest to check? Sets where every piece has a stated size, such as the SK-II Timeless Beauty Set and the Augustinus Bader Rich Renewal Trio.
