# Skincare routine order: which step goes first

**Short answer:** The usual order is thinnest to thickest: cleanser, toner or softener, essence, serum, eye cream, moisturizer, then face oil. In the morning, sunscreen goes on last. At night, a sleeping mask goes on last. When a brand gives its own order for its line, such as Shiseido or SK-II, follow the brand.

This page is for anyone who has a few luxury bottles and jars on the shelf and is not sure which one goes on first. It covers the standard thin-to-thick order, where eye cream and face oil fit, why sunscreen is always last in the morning, and what to do when a brand prints a different order on its carton. It describes textures and steps only. It does not promise any result for your skin, and anyone with a skin condition should ask a dermatologist before adding new products.

## The standard order, step by step

Most routines follow one simple rule: apply the most watery product first and the richest product last. Watery textures spread easily on bare skin. Thick creams and oils sit on top and would make it hard for a thin liquid to spread if they went first. That is the whole logic behind the order you see on most skincare charts.

You do not need every step. A short routine of cleanser, serum and moisturizer, plus sunscreen in the morning, follows the same order. Just skip the steps you do not use and keep the rest in sequence.

1. Cleanser: wash and pat dry.
2. Toner or softener: a watery lotion, pressed in with hands or a cotton pad.
3. Essence: a light, watery or slightly thicker liquid, pressed in with palms.
4. Serum: a few drops or one pump.
5. Eye cream: a rice-grain amount per eye, tapped on with the ring finger.
6. Moisturizer: a pea-size amount for the face.
7. Face oil: a few drops, pressed over the cream if you use one.
8. Morning: sunscreen last. Night: sleeping mask last, if you use one.

## Why thin goes before thick

Think of the routine as layers. A watery essence spreads into a thin film. A serum is usually a little thicker. A cream contains more oils and waxes, so it leaves a heavier film. If you put the cream down first, the next watery step tends to slide around on top instead of spreading evenly.

Texture matters more than the product name. Some brands call a thick gel a serum, and some call a milky fluid a moisturizer. If two products land in the same slot, apply the thinner one first. Our page on [serum vs essence](https://serumandjar.com/blog/serum-vs-essence) explains how those two steps differ, and [should serum go before or after moisturizer](https://serumandjar.com/blog/serum-before-or-after-moisturizer) covers the most common question in detail.

Give each layer a short moment to settle before the next one, often 30 seconds to a minute. Rushing layers is one of the common reasons products roll into little flakes, which we cover in [why skincare pills](https://serumandjar.com/blog/moisturizer-pilling-fix).

## Where eye cream and face oil fit

Eye cream usually goes after serum and before face moisturizer. That way the small amount of eye cream lands on the eye area first, and you can then spread face cream around it without dragging heavy cream onto the lids. Some people prefer eye cream after moisturizer, and both orders are common. See [eye cream before or after moisturizer](https://serumandjar.com/blog/eye-cream-before-or-after-moisturizer) for both views.

Face oil is the thickest step in most routines, so it normally goes after moisturizer. A few drops pressed over cream is the usual method. Augustinus Bader sells The Face Oil in a 30 ml bottle at $280, which works out to about $9.33 per ml, so a few drops per use is worth measuring rather than pouring.

| Step | Typical amount | How to apply |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Toner or softener | Enough to wet a cotton pad or palm | Press or sweep |
| Essence | A small pour into the palm | Press with palms |
| Serum | 2 to 3 drops or 1 pump | Smooth over face |
| Eye cream | Rice grain per eye | Tap with ring finger |
| Moisturizer | Pea size, about 0.3 to 0.5 ml | Dot and smooth |
| Face oil | 2 to 3 drops | Press over cream |

## Morning sunscreen is always the last step

In the morning, sunscreen goes on after everything else so it forms the top layer. If you use a day cream with SPF, it usually takes the moisturizer slot and acts as the last step. Shiseido, for example, tells you to apply Future Solution LX Total Protective Cream SPF 30 as the last step of the morning routine.

Do not mix sunscreen into your moisturizer to save a step, and do not put a face oil on top of it. Both habits can change how evenly the sunscreen sits on the skin. Our guide to [sunscreen in a luxury routine](https://serumandjar.com/blog/sunscreen-in-a-luxury-routine) covers how to layer it, and the [luxury day creams with SPF guide](https://serumandjar.com/best/best-luxury-day-cream-with-spf) compares jars that include it.

Note: Sunscreen guidance on the label always wins. Follow the amount and reapplication directions printed on the product.

## When the brand gives a different order

Some brands design a line to be used in their own sequence. Shiseido describes a six-step J-Beauty routine on its listings: cleanse, soften, strengthen, treat, moisturize, protect. SK-II tells you to apply Facial Treatment Essence after cleansing and toning. La Prairie calls Skin Caviar Essence-in-Lotion a pre-serum step. When a brand prints an order on the carton, use it for that line, because the textures were designed to follow each other.

If you mix brands, fall back on thin to thick. A watery essence from one brand still goes before a cream from another. Our step-by-step pages for [Shiseido Future Solution LX](https://serumandjar.com/blog/how-to-use-shiseido-future-solution-lx) and [SK-II Facial Treatment Essence](https://serumandjar.com/blog/how-to-use-sk-ii-facial-treatment-essence) show the brand orders in full.

## Adding a new product without confusion

Add one new product at a time and give it a slot based on its texture. Patch test first: apply a small amount to a discreet area such as the inner arm or behind the ear for a few days before using it on the face. Our [patch test guide](https://serumandjar.com/blog/how-to-patch-test-new-skincare) walks through it.

If you have a skin condition such as eczema, rosacea or acne, or if any product stings, burns or causes redness, stop using it and ask a dermatologist. A routine order chart is about layering textures, not about treating skin. ## Frequently asked questions

**Does the order really matter?** It matters for how products spread and sit on the skin. Thin products spread better on bare skin, and creams and oils are easier to apply on top. Following thin to thick also keeps sunscreen as the top layer in the morning.

**Does toner go before or after essence?** Toner or softener usually goes first, then essence. Our page on [essence vs toner](https://serumandjar.com/blog/essence-vs-toner) explains the difference between the two watery steps.

**Can I skip steps?** Yes. Many people use only cleanser, one serum and a moisturizer, with sunscreen in the morning. Keep the remaining steps in the same order.

**What if two products feel the same?** Apply the more watery one first. If they are truly the same thickness, the order makes little difference to how they spread.
